"I'm Old Not an Idiot" from the New York Times. Does anyone besides me sympathize with this Spanish gentlemen who has launched a successful protest against ageist bank policies like closing branches and forcing people to use smart phones to conduct serious business?

When will we get approval for a 4th dose of the vaccine? I'm ready. Australia and El Salvador approved it today. And the new variant has been detected in Colorado's wastewater.

This is an open thread, all topics welcome.

Because tonight in the 3rd Round of the NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament in Philadelphia, the Peacocks of St. Peter's University -- who, at No. 15 in the East bracket, are now the lowest seeded team ever to reach the "Elite 8" in tourney history -- tapped that feisty underdog in all of us.

Ukrainian journalist Roman Tsymbaliuk said in a post on Facebook that Russian Col. Yuri Medvedev was attacked after fighting in Ukraine left nearly half of the men in the 37th Motor Rifle Brigade dead, The Washington Post reported.

... for Russian generals. And Lt. Gen. Yakov Rezanstev, who commanded the Southern Military District's 49th Joint Force Army, was not any other senior Russian commander to lose his life in this fiasco of an invasion, which now makes him no. 7 overall.

No, sir and ma'am. Rezantev was the same general who had once intemperately boasted on Russian State TV, back on the fourth day of Vladimir Putin's Operation Enduring Fubar, that "this will all be over in a few hours."

And like several of his fellow late generals, Rezantev had been communicating on an unencrypted radio network far too close to the front, which allowed the Ukrainians to quickly determine his geocoordinates and then fix his exact location for a subsequent precision artillery strike, which killed him along with several members of his staff.

There's now a real possibility that Russia could actually lose this war, something which nobody - and I mean, nobody - saw coming a month ago. Gen. Rezantev's command occupied the southern Ukrainian port of Kherson two weeks ago. His death occurred as that city has reportedly been nearly surrounded by counterattacking Ukrainian troops.

President Biden's speech in Warsaw today was the most defiant and aggressive speech about Russia by a U.S. president since Ronald Reagan's "evil empire" remarks 40 years ago. Putin should read the tea leaves, declare victory and withdraw. Instead, he's doubling down.

The White House is attempting to walk back a major moment in President Biden's remarks on Saturday, in which he declared that Russian President Vladimir Putin should not remain in power.

"For God's sake, this man cannot remain in power," the president said at the end of his speech in Warsaw, Poland.

Following the remarks, a White House official said that comment was referring to Putin exercising power outside of Russia.

"The president's point was that Putin cannot be allowed to exercise power over his neighbors or the region. He was not discussing Putin's power in Russia, or regime change," the official said in an email.

"You cannot be a protector of the constitution if you are at war with it."

"Ginni obviously discussed all of this with her husband.  We can pretend not to know this but we do."  " You cannot look at these texts and not know close to a certainty, based on the texts, what is publicly known about their relationship and their history of shared partisan political activism and not know that they not only discussed the matter but that he was on the same page with her.

So Thomas himself is also party to this conspiracy, privy to its actions and goals if perhaps not taking affirmative steps to advance it."

Maybe someone should ask Clarence about this.  Maybe, a DOJ inquiry.  If we only had a Congressional Committee that was investigating this matter.

Speaker Pelosi stated "It's up to an individual justice to decide to recuse himself if his wife is participating in a coup."

Jamelle Bouie, in his NYTimes opinion piece "Ginni
Thomas is No Outlier"(March 31, 2022), states what many of us having long been saying..that there is very little distance between the fringes of the Republican Party and the elites who lead it.

Bouie's advise for Democrats and its leadership is: "they should give up whatever hope they had that the Republican Party will somehow return to normal, that the fever will break and American politics will snap back to reality .  From its base to its leaders, the modern Republican Party is fully in the grip of an authoritarian movement animated by extreme beliefs and fringe conspiracy theories."

So what to do?  Bouie believes the only alternative is to confront the Republican Party as forcefully as possible and show the extent to which that party has descended into conspiracies and corruption.

It would seem to me, however, that to be "forceful", it means calling an authoritarian and Dominionist movement by its name: Fascism.  And, to forcefully prosecute the corruption. And, to dispel the both sides do it mentality or need for balance among the media. And, for the Congress to prescribe ethics rules for Justices of the SC with punishments.

Unfortunately, the only real way to address the Ginni/Clarence problem (as Republicans, they both are on the same fanatical, seditionist, fascist page, according to Bouie) is to impeach and convict Clarence. Of course, in so doing Ginni will become a nothing in the power structure.  The next question is will this, the only remedy, succeed? No, is my estimate. Is the process worth it? The risk of trying is success.

on Judge Jackson's sentencing in that child porn case, is no doubt related to the fact that she was (at the time) the Federal District Judge who sentenced a Q Anon believer to four years in prison.

Edgar Maddison Welch pleaded guilty in March 2017 to federal charges of assault with a dangerous weapon and transporting a firearm over state lines.

Welch heard of the (fictional,lie-based) conspiracy theory relentlessly being circulated by Trump-supporting sites that the Comet Ping Pong Pizzeria basement was the home of a Satanic child sex ring involving Hillary Clinton.

The North Carolina man got in his truck and drove 300 miles to Washington, DC to "investigate" so as to look out for the children. He entered the pizza parlor (which has no basement) where numerous children were present brandishing a 3-foot AR-15 and a loaded revolver in a holster on his hip.

Terrified employees and diners fled; he pointed a a gun at one employee who ran for his life. Welch shot through the lock of a closet, damaging a computer.

Prosecutors sought a sentence of four and a half years, while Welch's defense asked for one and a half years in prison.  Judge Jackson sentenced Welch to four years.  Apparently, Republican senators will not forgive Judge Jackson for sending this fine young MAGAt to prison.  And, of course, in the process, publicly exposing another absurdity of the Republicans.

    Yes, I've watched every episode (none / 0) (#47)
by Jeralyn on Mon Mar 28, 2022 at 02:44:11 AM EST
I'm transfixed by the shows of people from country X moving halfway across the world to be expats in another country.

The Mediterranean is beautiful and Portugal (the Algarve area) and Istanbul (half of which is in Europe and the other half in Asia ) are also on my list. I have some friends there and it's very cosmopolitan. Much fewer tourists on the Asian side, and much cheaper.

Much as I'd love to just move to a beach, I'm really not sure that's what I want. I'm not a very outdoors person and other than loving to walk down a deserted beach at 5 am singing along to my music and kicking up waves with my feet along the shoreline. I really think the most magical hours of the day are the hours right before sunrise.

In Paris many years ago, I would get up at five am and the only people on the street were the street cleaners and by 6 the vendors arrived with carts and restaurants where they sold the most fabulous baggettes with cheese and ham and mustard.

So my practical list is down to: Mexico (Oaxoca &  Mexico, City, Zihuantanejo, Hualtuco, Ixtapa (not so humid but nice beaches and great food); Tulum, and other places on the east cost   of Cancun. I've spent too much time in Puerta Vallarta to want to live there (in the early 80;s we bought a condo building there 8 or so units.)

The place I'd really like to go is Tasmania, the island under Australia I'd actually like to spend time in Tasmania, and maybe Melbourne. Even long term tourist visas are difficult to get.
Colombia is still high on my list (Medellin, not Bogota)_and I think Ecuador has too many economic and political programs now.
I can't choose a remote island because I am very ocd about having a good hospital near. Panama is also on the list.

If you know of any others, please pass them on!

the ex-pat fascination because I have it too. As far as Mexico we were in the Yucatan last year. Some ex-pats like Merida but others say it is incredibly hot and humid there. We were in Playa del Carmen which has a lot of ex-pats.Currently Tulum is having drug cartel problems with people being murdered on the beach in broad daylight. I think I like the west coast much better but prefer the smaller areas north and south of Puerto Vallarta. In February we were in Bucerias. It had a great small town vibe. You might also look into San Miguel de Allende which is in the mountains. We were going to visit there but it is a trek. You fly into Mexico City and then take a bus for 2-3 hours.

    Tasmania does sound fascinating.

I was reading yesterday it was coming so I called the Health Department.

Oddly all the small pharmacies that were giving the vaccine have stopped.  And do not plan to start again.  I called several all said the same thing and would not give a reason.  So the only places around here I know about is Walmart and the Health department.

Both said they expected word on this soon.  But no more opportunities for early boosters like last time.

    Today I asked my orthopedic doctor (5.00 / 1) (#67)

about getting the second booster, and he said he has only gotten the original two vaccinations and wasn't planning to get the boosters.  He did say he had been exposed to the virus twice.  He does run a masked up tight office procedure where you call from the parking lot and are the only patient in the office.  He has thank you notes from many Miami football , basket ball, and other sport figures all over his offices.  After years of injuries I just know the good bone doctors.   He moved his family to Key Largo to get away from the crime up in the city.

He is the doctor that performed the cut and chop hip replacement I have, but it was 21 years ago, and the new fancy and fast procedures hadn't been invented yet.

I'm back on the cortisone  again in one of my ski racing mangled shoulders.  The juice helps, but it's quite difficult to cast a fly rod, so I've dropped down to lightweight rods and fish.  Still fun ,but nothing like a big blue marlin on the end of the string.

Interview with Chris  Matthews, Trump stated that there must be some form of punishment for women seeking/ having abortions.  The Texas Republican's debate on a Sharia-type killing for abortions is just in line with Republican thinking.

Republicans seem to have foresight and planning acuity.  Having succeeded in banning abortions through the fugitive uterus act, they are moving on to the punishment such as death penalty. The next will be how to effect the deaths--stoning or firing squad.

I do not know what it will take for the media and even some Democrats to recognize the Republican Party is not a valid political party in a democracy.  It is a fascist party.

These right to life folks are definitely for inflicting the death penalty on anyone who doesn't agree with their policies.

Also, next on the chopping block is birth control. It is all about punishing women for engaging in sex and has little or nothing to protecting life. Once they eliminate abortion and birth control, they will continue their practice of abandoning the children they forced into existence. If they live/or die in extreme poverty, too bad. It's, in their viewpoint, the punishment they and their families deserve for engaging in sex. Sex, especially deviant sex, is only acceptable in the Republican politicians they continue to elect.

According to sources in at the Defense Ministry in Kyiv, the Russian 200th Motorized Division was reported to have been cut off and destroyed in battle with Ukrainian forces yesterday near Sumi in the eastern Ukraine.

Rather than be taken prisoner the Russian division commander, which the Ministry reported to be Gen. Sergey Kaizel, reportedly committed suicide. Another commander from the 13th Tank Regiment did likewise after his unit was forced into retreat.

The Russians have lost command and control over large sections of the front, which has resulted in forward units being cut off since their commanders don't have freedom of initiative and must wait for orders that often never come.

Poorly provisioned and even more poorly led in a hostile country where even the ethnic Russian Ukrainians want them gone, Russian troop morale is reportedly close to collapse.

They're losing and they know it.

Kevin McCarthy isn't the only senior Republican who wants to have a talk with Rep. Madison Cawthorn about his claim that some of his colleagues invited him to orgies and used cocaine," Politico reports.

"Rep. Scott Perry (R-PA), who chairs the ultra-conservative House Freedom Caucus to which Cawthorn belongs, said he plans to speak to the North Carolina Republican one-on-one about the incendiary comment. Perry further indicated that Cawthorn should identify the individuals he alleges engaged in that behavior."

"Perry is not alone in that opinion among House Republicans -- Cawthorn's claims caused an internal uproar at Tuesday's conference meeting

He's in trouble in his house race and no one seems interested in helping him.

He tried to switch districts to a more favorable one for Republicans and was not able to.  So he is forced to run in the district with the voters he tried to dump.

He probably going to lose and he doesn't seem like the go quietly type.  Lucky for us.

Rep. Madison Cawthorn (R-NC) admitted suggestions that his colleagues have done cocaine and invited him to orgies were "exaggerated" in a tense meeting with Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA), Axios reports.

Said McCarthy: "I just told him he's lost my trust, he's gonna have to earn it back, and I laid out everything I find is unbecoming. And, you can't just say `You can't do this again.' I mean, he's, he's got a lot of members very upset."

He added: "It's just frustrating. There's no evidence behind his statements. And when I sit down with him... I told him you can't make statements like that, as a member of Congress, that affects everybody else and the country as a whole."

you can't make statements "like that".

I hope Cawthorn at least said, "have you met Marjorie Taylor Green?"

Could Trump Blow the Midterms for Republicans?
March 30, 2022 at 6:44 am EDT By Taegan Goddard 16 Comments

Playbook: "All signs point to a typical midterm election this year in which the president's party suffers double-digit losses in the House. The GOP has the big structural advantages on its side: a Democratic president with low approval ratings, a sour public mood driven by inflation concerns and an edge in polling on issues like crime, education and immigration that are proving important to voters in the crucial swing suburbs where the midterms will be decided."

"One of the few ways Republicans could potentially blow this electoral equivalent of a layup is if former President Donald Trump suddenly returns to center court."

"Trump is not toxic for his party everywhere. Republicans did better than expected in House races in 2020 because of the high MAGA turnout Trump generated. But he's deadly for the GOP in the decisive suburbs at the heart of 2022 politics. Recall how Virginia's Glenn Youngkin treated Trump like Voldemort, concerned that even uttering his name would repel potential supporters in NoVa."

"As the maps stand on March 30 at 5 p.m. Eastern, 175 congressional districts have a FiveThirtyEight partisan lean of D+5 or bluer, 181 have a partisan lean of R+5 or redder and 33 are in the `highly competitive' category between D+5 and R+5."

Will Democrats, facing the normal midterm election headwinds plus high inflation, do surprisingly well in 2022 for the simple, sad fact that there are fewer Republicans?

Or, to put it another way: Can we expect this partisan mortality shift to show up in the polling data?

we are in minoritarian rule. It is not clear to me how long a majority will abide by that.  State legislatures often are calling the shots over the populations centers/tax base of a state.

How long, too, will it be before Red state legislatures attempt to take over Blue cities.  This has already occurred in Detroit when a Republican legislature and Republican Governor Snyder took "administrative control" over the city relegating the city's elected officials to the political dustbin. And, then came Flint.

And, of course, there is the governmental structure that permitted Hillary to win by 3 million and still lose.

    Define "exodus" (none / 0) (#117)
by CaptHowdy on Sat Apr 02, 2022 at 07:48:48 AM EST

    Conclusion

Did the COVID-19 pandemic start an urban exodus? The estimates presented here strongly suggest that migration flows were unfavorable for urban neighborhoods during 2020. However, the word "exodus" emphasizes that migrants are leaving a particular area in large numbers. If we look at the gross flows underlying the trends in Figures 3 through 6 (available in the appendix), we can see that the declines of in-migration are almost always greater than the increases in out-migration. Out-migration did increase in many urban neighborhoods, but the magnitudes probably would not fit most definitions of an exodus. What is certain is that hundreds of thousands of people who would have moved into an urban neighborhood in a typical year were unwilling or unable to do so in 2020. These people may be harder to identify, label, and interview, but they may be best positioned to tell the real story.

Laws that treat aborted fetuses as if they were dead babies have sometimes been passed in anti-abortion jurisdictions to harass and shame the pregnant women, burden the providers, and "virtue signal" for the anti-choicers, but that is a rarity. I would expect that legally speaking the products of an abortion are viewed as a category of medical waste, perhaps a special category to be handled with more sensitivity, but not the equivalent of a corpse.

As soon as this column began to materialize in my brain, I started to hear the pushback and counterpoint that would emerge. There will be at least two dozen people who accuse me of being a prisoner of the moment. Rick and Morty has never been bigger. It's a staple of the geek community and about to premiere its third season. The show has had a buzzworthy year after a surprise third season premiere on April Fools Day. The show has been rocketing in popularity since season one and has become the water cooler animated show. But as I rewatched the first two seasons this week, it calcified the idea that I was watching a show that in two short seasons managed to achieve a kind of perfection that few programs ever achieve. In defense of any detractors to this opinion, we might have been saying the same thing about Lost after season two and we know how that turned out. Regardless, here's my breakdown of why Rick and Morty is the best animated series ever.

Ghislaine Maxwell on Friday lost her bid to overturn her U.S. sex trafficking conviction, even after a juror acknowledged having falsely stated before the trial that he had not been sexually abused.

U.S. Circuit Judge Alison Nathan said the juror, a man known in court papers as Juror 50, testified truthfully at a hearing last month, after Maxwell's lawyers said his false answers on a pretrial questionnaire justified granting a new trial.
"His failure to disclose his prior sexual abuse during the jury selection process was highly unfortunate, but not deliberate," Nathan wrote. "The court further concludes that Juror 50 harbored no bias toward the defendant and could serve as a fair and impartial juror."

How would the court know it wasn't deliberate and why does that matter if the defense would have struck that juror had they known?

Lately, I have not been impressed with our legal system's efforts to provide high profile defendants with fair trials. Since I don't follow the regular trials that don't get any press, perhaps my expectations are too high.  I like to think we can do better.

how many retired people might be thinking about joining the workforce since it would seem to be relatively easy to find work. You would think age would not be a deterrent but I have seen so called desperate employers here locally not do what is needed to actually hire somebody.

should be an alcohol test to see if you have had a cocktail in the last week or so or it's just bullshite.

Like I said if you really need employees cut the bullshite or stop complaining about it.

In an area like this half the population (at least) has literally been shut out of the workforce.

It crap and it's not justified by workers comp.

is the way it currently is. Once an accident happens you are immediately tested. What I am saying is that lots of the time insurance companies require things like employment drug tests as part of their agreement in insuring you.

As for me personally I have 2 cousins that are drug addicts who manage to pass the pre-employment drug tests. So I am kinda wondering if those people that don't pass just don't care about passing?

    I've done it

It's not that easy.  And not everyone knows how.  Also it doesn't work as well on some people.  It all about how your body deals with the massive amounts of water.

Also that only works with pee tests.  There are other kinds.

My point is most people who smoke weed are not "drug addicts".  Any more than a person who has a cocktail or two is an alcoholic.  And should no more be locked out of the workforce because of it.

Also it only works if you know when it's happening.

Insurance once would not insure you if you had a preexisting condition.  Insurance companies suck.  That can be changed.

During the program at the Reagan Library in Simi Valley, CA, in which Justice Barrett was the headliner, Fred Ryan, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library Foundation, asked the Justice (with the Gini matter in mind), if there should be Court guidelines on what "working spouses" should and should not do.

"I don't think most spouses would be very happy about those guidelines," she responded. "Certainly, when I try to give my husband guidelines about what to do or not to do in the house, even, that does not go over very well", she said to laughter.

When Lawrence O'Donnell reported Justice Barrett's response to this important and timely question, he criticized it on the basis of being "childish."

While it may be childish, I believe it is more concerning than that. certainly no laughing matter. Both from the perspective of an attempt to trivialize serious Ginni-type issues, and her knee-jerk women to be subordinate reaction.

Perhaps, it would have less an impression if it were not for her, her husband and her father's membership in the cult-like "People of Praise", a "covenant community"---a charismatic Catholic group with an all-male board of Governors, outside the mainstream of Catholicism,  wherein husbands are the "heads".

Lawmakers in Tennessee this week will vote on a bill that would establish common law marriages in the state but would not set a minimum age requirement. Some say it could open the door for child sex abuse.

Maybe it's just me but this seems badly timed for the campaign to lable democrats as pedos.

Tennessee bill would eliminate age requirements for marriages

"The question isn't just whether the nation's highest court will overturn the 50-year old abortion rights law, or whether the commission will reveal new and explosive information about the events leading up to and culminating in the attack on the U.S. Capitol, but whether these events will have a notable impact on the 2022 midterms. hearing this "not energized" stuff. I don't know where that is coming from, maybe the polls are saying it, I don't know. However here in GA indivisible and other groups have been just as active as they were prior to 2020. Maybe one of the reasons it is that way here is that we have women, Asians, African Americans & even white guys running for statewide office on the D ticket & people are excited about keeping the state blue and not falling back into the red.

"Angry voters slammed by higher prices and scarred by two years of fighting the pandemic are poised to punish Democrats in midterm elections, according to some of the leading experts in consumer sentiment and behavior."

"And with inflation persisting and Russia's war on Ukraine stoking uncertainty, there are indications that public sentiment is getting worse, not better, posing a growing threat to Democrats' already slim chances of holding onto Congress, they say."

I love it when a young filmmaker surprises me by using a classic song from my youth and gives it new life.

I had read the reviews of this so I was eager to see t when it dropped on HBO today.  Was not expecting the song.  I love Richard and Linda Thompson.  They are not as famous as they should be.

So, I recently watched "The Night House", a horror movie about grief and how far you would go to protect someone you dearly love and this song was playing in the background a few times. I actually thought it was a modern song but lo and behold, this song is from the album "I want to see the bright lights tonight" by Richard & Linda Thompson from 1974

    How It Works (none / 0) (#195)
by RickyJim on Sun Apr 10, 2022 at 01:37:12 PM EST
    From Wikipedia:
Under Article 7 of the Constitution of France, the President of the Republic is elected to a five-year term in a two-round election. If no candidate secures an absolute majority of votes in the first round, a second round is held two weeks later between the two candidates who received the most votes.[3] According to the Constitution of France, the first round of the presidential election must be held between 20 and 35 days before the transition of power at the end of the five-year term of the incumbent officeholder. As Emmanuel Macron took office on 14 May 2017, the transition of power is expected to take place on 13 May 2022. Correspondingly, the first round of the presidential election will be held between 8 and 23 April 2022, with the second round held two weeks after the first.[4] On 13 July 2021, Government Spokesman Gabriel Attal announced the dates for the election, respectively 10 April 2022 for the first round and 24 April 2022 for the eventual second round.[5]

To be listed on the first-round ballot, candidates needed to secure 500 signatures (often referred to as parrainages in French) from national or local elected officials from at least 30 different departments or overseas collectivities, with no more than a tenth of these signatories from any single department. The signatures were submitted to the Constitutional Council, which is the sole authority to designate participants.[6]

This is a much better way to pick candidates and vote on them than what the US does.
